Shabbos
Late on a Friday night, a woman silently prays over the Shabbos candles. The image was taken as she pulled her hands in to cover her eyes after sweeping her hands as if to gather in the flames to her three times, recreating the same traditions from earlier that day and every other Friday. The woman is my mother, Karen Smith, and she has taught me these pieces of my heritage from childhood. Every week I've watched her do just this even before I even understood our family's history with these candlesticks or what she might be thinking during these silent moments.
