I spoke with Emma at an odd time, only a few days before her upcoming meniscus surgery--the second she'd had on that same knee. "I'm trying to reconcile my life with my body," she said, telling me that she was about to be out of work for several weeks due to the surgery. When we spoke, she was dealing with her long-term medical issues even more intensely than her usual. In preparation for the surgery, Emma's doctor had taken her off the medications that she typically takes to function with both ankyolising spondylitis and Ehler-Danlos Syndrome. "...Now it’s sort of a weird game, if I can make it through to Thursday," Emma said, as she revealed that she'd been taken off yet another of her usually helpful treatment courses in preparation for that Thursday's surgery.
